EINAYICH HACHUMOT

YOUR BROWN EYES

Your brown eyes -
that remind me of the dreams
of those nice and quiet days,
of the beautiful smiles and looks,
that don't leave my mind.

I remember you,
still since you were a little girl,
with two dimples and whisper of melody,
and with the same smile always on your mouth -
I hoped it would be beautiful.

And with a captured look,
that caused me to think of a sad day,
I wanted you to answer to my heart's wishes,
and not to curse my feelings.

But the silence did not stop,
and my thought was already different,
the thought towards the little girl,
the same girl that I hung my hopes on,
she also caused my disappointment.

Hebrew words

Note:
Original Greek song title "Ta mavra matia sou" = "Your black (dark) eyes".

It was originally performed by Manolis Angelopoulos, who was first and foremost a singer. There are many versions of this tune, which is regarded as one of the classic songs in the Greek discography.

This is the information according to Greek sources. However Angelopoulos, who was a great admirer of Arabic music, actually "borrowed" the melody from the Lebanese singer Fairuz! So, the original melody is Arabic, from the LP "Andaloussiyat" by Fairuz. However, the Israeli version is so similar to Angelopoulos' rendition that I think that the Israeli producers covered the Greek version, rather than Fairuz's.

Thanks to Eva Broman for this information.
