HERZL

Herzl and all the respected gentlemen
Put the foundation of the Jewish State,
in Basel Wolfsson and Nordau and bubbly Ussishkin
And Motzkin and all members of the Congress Wolfsson brought
the funds to the land Nordau gave the respect and fame
Ussishkin gave the energy of the generation
and Bialik brought "El Hatzipor"
Only Herzl walked there hurting
Because Herzl gave his heart to the land

He ran and worried and lectured and pushed
From the secretary to the minister
From the minister to the count
He believed like a baby in every thing he fabricated
And said (If you want it is not a tale"
He went to the Sinai to the Galilee and to Judea
Checked the soil and the work tools
He crossed the sea and rode a mule
and In Mikve Israel (a place in Israel) he met the Kaiser
And then in front of Wilhelm he suddenly felt pain
Because he had to open his heart again

He fought Montefiore and reproached Rothchild
He invested all his savings in the Congresses
He left his wife and kids at home
Feeling on their backs the Jews' troubles
He dirtied his hands and didn't feel low
He gave tips and met the Sultan
Otherwise how would Abdul Hamid the second
know what is Zionism all about
He was a bit Benjamine and a bit Ze'ev*
But when he came to the Sultan again he offered his heart.

At the end when there was already a start
He was asked to pay the price of glory
One demanded the funds and debts
Another demanded the fame and respect
One demanded revoltion and one equality
One demanded the whole Zion immediatly
And Herzl who had nothing left
Gave his heart and closed his eyes
And then all the respected gentlemen
Cried over the prophet of the Land of the Jews.

#1: A description of the meeting between Kaiser Wilhelm and Herzl
(1898), plus interesting observations on Herzl can be found at:

Note #2: In the song it is mentioned: "He left his
wife and kids at home
Feeling on their backs the Jews' troubles"
And: "He invested all his savings in the Congresses"
When Herzl died (1904) his family (wife+3 kids) was left with no money
to support itself. Herzl's wife died 3 years after him. His eldest
daughter, Pauline, died in 1930. Had no children. His son, Hans,
converted to Christianity, did not have kids either, and committed
suicide a day after his sister died. The last daughter, Trude, died in
the Theresienstadt camp, 1943. Her husband died shortly after her. Trude
was survived by a son, Stephan, who fought with the British army in the
war. In 1946, shortly after receiving final confirmation of his
parents' fate, he committed suicide by jumping off a bridge. No scions
left of the Herzl family.

HERTZL

Hertzl e todos os respeit?veis cavalheiros
propuseram a funda??o do Estado Judeu.
Basel Wolffsohn, Nordau e o fervilhante Ussishkin.
O Congresso Wolffsohn captou fundos para o pa?s,
Nordau lhe deu respeito e fama
Ussishkin forneceu energia para sua cria??o
e Bialik trouxe "El Hatzipor".

Galil?ia e ? Jud?ia,
