A SONG AFTER THE RAIN

Trains after the rain on their way from city to city
Along the route is a small station
I descend at the path I knew
And once again I hear
Next to the stone houses
A cow lowing in the barn, goats in the grass
And now after years in the rain
No one will recognize me, bashful Chapozo
And all the village kids
returning from kindergarten
Always laugh aloud
Whenever some unknown visitor arrives
Who will remember the barber’s son?
I step out of continuity,
Humming the whole way back

A song after the rain, a song after the rain
An old song that Mother taught me
A song after the rain, a song after the rain
An old song trilling through the windows
And weaving/awakening memories within me

In the streets after the rain
Life is the same as yesterday and before.
The/a doubt still accompanies me:
Am I free to go home?
I remembered a happy song
But now I forget.
Maybe I’m running away from the rain.
In the plaza near the wine shop
Someone suddenly yells, “Chapozo is back”
Caf? customers, couples at the bar
Wave at me as if nothing ever happened
Here routine flows uninterrupted.
I step out of the continuity
And weep the whole way back.

A song after the rain...
